Mystery Number Game: Clue by Clue

Clue by Clue

A mystery number game: read the clues and find the hidden number.

Opening the case file…

How to play
  • A number is hiding. Clue 1 tells you its range and one fact about it.
  • You start with one star for every clue in the case (3 to 5).
  • Name the number with Accuse. The fewer clues you open, the more stars you keep.
  • Opening the next clue costs a star. A new clue also opens by itself every 60 seconds, and a wrong accusation opens the next clue for you.
  • Leaving this page for more than 10 seconds, giving up or switching level during a case scores 0 stars for that case. Reloading the page is fine.

Clue by Clue is a free mystery number game that turns number sense into detective work. A number is hiding, and students must find it using clues such as "I am an odd number" or "My tens digit is bigger than my ones digit." Each clue rules out more suspects until only one number is left. Students then name the number, and the fewer clues they open, the more stars they keep.

Every case gives students practice with core math topics:

  • Odd and even numbers
  • Multiples and times tables, from the 2 times table up to the 9 times table
  • Place value: tens digits and ones digits
  • Comparing numbers with "more than" and "less than"
  • Comparing digits: bigger, smaller, the same, or double
  • Adding digits to find a digit sum
  • Square numbers and prime numbers (Hard level)

Just as important, the game builds logical reasoning. Students learn to combine several facts, test a guess against each clue, and eliminate numbers step by step. A wrong guess is never wasted, because the game explains which clue the number breaks.

For teachers, Clue by Clue works well as a warm-up, a math center activity, or a quick challenge at the end of a lesson.

Students can also pick a nickname and compete for first place on the leaderboard. No sign-up is needed, and no personal information is collected.
