A word problem about discount

The $580 computer Nancy purchased was on sale for 15% off. How much was deducted from the original price?

Solution

The amount that was deducted from the original is 15% of 580 or 15% × 580

15% × 580 = 15/100 × 580 = 15/100 × 580/1

15% × 580 = (15 × 580)/(1 × 100) = 8700/100 = 87

15% off 580 is 87, so the amount that was deducted is 87 dollars.
