Multiplying and subtracting integers word problem

by ARDITA
(new Britian, CT, USA)

A multiple-choice test contains 25 questions. Correct answers are worth 4 points each. 2 points are deducted for each wrong answer. Unanswered questions receive no points.

Ren randomly answers all the questions and gets 5 correct answers. Bia answers 3 questions correctly and 3 questions incorrectly and leaves the remaining 19 questions unanswered. What is Ren’s score minus Bia’s score?

Solution

Ren has 5 correct answers and 25 - 5 or 20 incorrect answers.

Ren's score is 5 x 4 - 20 x 2 = 20 - 40 = -20

Bia's score is 3 x 4 - 3 x 2 = 12 - 6 = 6

Ren's score minus Bia's score = -20 - 6 = -26
