Types of literal equations worksheets you can make

  • One-step literal equations: like ax = b, so x = b/a, or x/a = b, so x = ab
  • Two-step literal equations: like ax + b = c, so x = (c − b)/a
  • Literal equations with parentheses: like a(x + b) = c, so x = c/a − b
  • Variables on both sides: like ax + b = cx + d, so x = (d − b)/(a − c)
  • Linear equations in two variables: solve for y or x, like 3x + 4y = 10, so y = −(3/4)x + 5/2
  • Rearranging formulas: like d = rt, solved for t. The formulas include: perimeter and area of squares, rectangles, triangles, trapezoids and circles volume and surface area of boxes and cylinders simple interest density temperature conversion, like F = (9/5)C + 32, so C = (5/9)(F − 32) slope-intercept form
  • Formulas with shapes: each problem has a labeled drawing of a square, rectangle, triangle, circle, trapezoid, box or cylinder, like A = ½h(b₁ + b₂) solved for h
  • Using the new formula: after solving, students find a value from given numbers, like “Find h when r = 4 and V = 32π.”

Make each worksheet your own:

  • four difficulty levels, from x + a = b up to fraction answers and formulas like A = πr², where solving for r needs a square root
  • always solve for x, or for different letters like m, n, w and t
  • choose how many problems to include
  • every worksheet comes with an answer key that accepts equivalent forms of each answer
